A Taste of Welsh Food in Swansea Marina – Lunch at The Welsh House
If you’re looking for authentic Welsh food in Swansea The Welsh House is a must-visit. We recently enjoyed a lunch there after seeing actor Michael Sheen at a brilliant Q&A event, so it felt like a uniquely Welsh day!
This independent regional restaurant really champions Wales with a menu inspired by traditional Welsh dishes, using seasonal and high-quality local ingredients.
Discover Authentic Welsh Food in Swansea Marina
Located right by the Swansea Marina, the restaurant offers a warm and authentic Welsh dining experience next to the water. The space feels much bigger than expected, with cosy interior seating and charming outdoor pods perfect for a relaxed meal or special group gathering. The restaurant was buzzing with a Friday crowd, from afternoon tea-goers to a lively hen celebration! This spot brings together Welsh hospitality and coastal charm, making it ideal for both locals and visitors exploring the Swansea and Gower Peninsula area.
Traditional Starters and Mains with Local Welsh Ingredients
Our meal started with two traditional Welsh dishes. We tried the Welsh Cockles and Laverbread Rarebit Crostini, topped with smoky streaky bacon. A true taste of the Welsh coastline! If we see cockles and laverbread on a menu we have to order it! This was followed by Lamb Cawl, a special on the menu that day. This traditional soup was served with Welsh cheddar cheese (great to see, not everywhere serves it the traditional way with cheese), crusty bread, and Welsh butter. It was delicious, giving that warm, cosy feeling of home-cooked food.
For our main courses we ordered the Beef Burger, which came in a double malt beer bun, topped with Welsh dragon cheese and served with The Welsh House’s signature slaw, tomatoes, pickles, and a fresh baby gem lettuce.
We also ordered the Rump Steak, which came with a Caesar-style lettuce wedge and thick-cut chips sprinkled with Halen Môn Sea Salt. The steak was tender, though could have been a little more pink as we asked for it medium rare.
We didn’t have space for pudding, unfortunately. Though the Welsh cakes topped with Crwst Merlyn liqueur, Chantilly cream and berry compote was very tempting!
Welsh Drinks to Complement Your Meal
For those exploring Welsh drinks and cuisine, The Welsh House offers an impressive Welsh drinks selection. We enjoyed a bottle of Gower Gold, a local beer from Gowery Brewery, and a Heartsease Farm Ginger Beer, which was a Welsh brand from Radnor Hills we hadn’t seen before.
