Review of The Shed – A Taste of Swansea’s Newest Destination Restaurant

If you’re staying at Clyne Farm Centre and looking for an incredible dining experience in Swansea, The Shed Restaurant Swansea is a must-visit. Located in the heart of the SA1 Restaurants Swansea scene, this exciting new restaurant opened in February 2024 and is already making waves in the local food scene. Set in a former industrial dock building, The Shed has a sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere, offering a seasonal Welsh menu that changes daily and showcases the best local produce.

We had a delightful morning walking from Clyne Farm Centre along the coastline to the restaurant. With the sun shining, we took a leisurely detour through the Marina Street Market (second Sunday of every month 10am to 3pm) picking up some irresistible treats for later—onion bhaji scotch eggs from Samosaco and Gower Doughnuts (you need to try both of these!). The Shed is located beside the water at Prince of Wales Dock, alongside local favourites like The Welsh House and Rasoi Waterfront. What makes The Shed Restaurant truly special is its focus on locally sourced food and its creative menu, all served in a welcoming atmosphere.

As soon as we arrived, the friendly staff made us feel right at home. The kitchen is open plan so you can watch Swansea-born Chef Jonathan Woolway and his team craft beautiful dishes using the finest seasonal ingredients. Jonathan, who previously worked at London’s famed St. John, brings his passion for locally sourced food in Swansea to every dish, and his return to Swansea is a huge win for the city’s culinary scene.

Our Meal at The Shed

The menu changes daily, and we were lucky to sample some wonderful dishes during our visit.

  • Appetisers: We started with Cockle Croquettes, Olives, and fresh Bread and Butter. The croquettes were a standout—crispy, flavourful, and packed with Welsh cockles. We could have eaten a whole bowl of them!
  • Starters: We opted for the Grilled Patty Pan with Whipped Brefu Bach and Mint Vinaigrette, and the Cured Sewin with Pickled Cucumber, Horseradish, and Rye. Both dishes were bursting with freshness and creativity, but the whipped Brefu Bach (a Welsh ewe’s milk cheese) was a real revelation, perfectly complemented by the mint vinaigrette.
  • Mains: The Roast Bacon Chop with Dandelion, Roast Shallot, and Mustard was a hearty, flavour-packed dish & the chop was huge! The Gower Seabass with Romesco Sauce and Grilled Courgettes was delicate yet full of bold flavours. We also shared a side of Gower New Potatoes with loads of butter—simple but delicious.
  • Desserts: Known for their puddings, The Shed didn’t disappoint. We shared an Olive Oil Parfait and Yoghurt Panna Cotta with Blueberries. The parfait was unique—savoury but perfectly balanced. Perfect for those who don’t like overly sweet dishes. The panna cotta was also a lovely, refreshing way to finish the meal.

To wash it all down, we enjoyed a crisp bottle of white wine (the sun was out so rude not to!) alongside a sweet dessert wine to finish. The entire meal felt indulgent, but every dish was made with care, respect for the ingredients, and a deep connection to local Welsh flavours.

The Experience

Dining at The Shed Restaurant Swansea felt like a real celebration of Welsh ingredients and culture. The daily-changing menu adds a sense of excitement – no two visits will be the same. While not the cheapest meal, it’s perfect for a special occasion, and you can feel the heart and soul that Chef Jonathan Woolway and his team have poured into it.

After our meal, we wandered over to Beer Riff, an independent brewery just around the corner, where we sat in the sunshine, sipping craft beers and watching the boats drift by – a perfect way to end the day.
